The combination of our proactive environmental safety program, an aggressive maintenance schedule, and the use of the highest quality equipment ensures that The Vane Brothers Company will continue to operate safely and productively on the Chesapeake Bay and in the Mid Atlantic region for years to come.

The key elements of our safety program are training, certification, and continued investment in the safe and reliable equipment. The Safety Management Team continually conducts in-service training and on-shore refresher programs. In addition, members of our crews attend courses for advanced skills such as new navigation techniques, fire fighting, and dangerous cargo handling.

Both personnel and equipment are certified routinely by U. S. Coast Guard staff. In addition, The Vane Brothers Company is proud to have received certification from the American Waterways Operators Responsible Carrier Program in 1998. The rigorous evaluation required for this certification demonstrates a commitment to safe handling and operation of dangerous liquid cargoes above and beyond all other required standards.

The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 mandates that all petroleum carrying tank barges be double skinned by 2015. To meet this requirement in a timely manner, The Vane Brothers Company has committed to an aggressive schedule of building state of the art, double skinned barges. The Company took delivery of its first new 30,000 barrel barge, built by Baltimore Marine Incorporated, in June of 1999. Delivery of the sister barge is expected for late summer 1999.
